Eliminating data loss from ransomware attack

After spinning off from NPC Group in 2019, NPC System focuses on developing and providing enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions and deployment services to manufacturing customers. It aims to help organizations improve their operating efficiency by leveraging the know-how of NPC Group network across various domestic and overseas affiliated companies.

Before Commvault, NPC System used Microsoft System Center Data Protection Manager but could not support the latest version of Microsoft Windows and Linux operating system. The company also experienced a ransomware attack recently and failed to recover backup copies.

As a result, NPC System selected Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery as the new backup solution for its deduplication feature, user-friendly reporting dashboard, simplified licensing model, and additional security.

“Though ransomware attack may not occur frequently, we must be prepared to prevent catastrophic impact to our business and avoid revenue loss,” said Jeon Hyeon Seo, Team Leader at System Operation Unit, NPC System. “By using Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery for secondary backup, we are confident that our data are secure and that we’ve eliminated the risk of data loss in the event of disasters and cyberattack.”

Halved management workload and reduced licensing cost

The previous backup solution was not user-friendly and could only support full data recovery. If a user wanted data from a specific point in time, the IT team had to restore all data and then extract specific data separately. In addition, NPC System needed to connect directly to the server and manually verify individual backup results. This created extra workload for administrators to manage the operation and determine the root cause for any backup failures.

By implementing Commvault solution, NPC System has accelerated its backup speed by 10 times and increased operational efficiency. Administrators now receive automatic emails for backup results via a user-friendly reporting dashboard and restore only data that users need.

“Thanks to the intuitive user interface and table-level recovery feature with Commvault, we cut the time spent on recovery tasks by 50% and maximized our productivity,” Jeon said.

The licensing option from other vendors was also complex and required a purchase of additional licenses for backup from Linux servers. With Commvault’s flexible licensing model, NPC System can subscribe on a per-capacity or per-server basis and align with the requirements of the IT environment.

“With Commvault, we gained a simplified licensing framework without worrying about paying huge costs for future system expansion,” Jeon said.

Ensuring data readiness and supporting future growth

NPC System completed the solution selection, system deployment and final testing in just two months. The company uses Commvault Complete Backup and Recovery to back up the main database, operating system, business applications, 18 Windows servers and 2 Linux servers.

“Among the key reasons we selected Commvault were its proven excellence in backup and recovery, and its recognition by leading market research firms, such as Gartner and Forrester Research, as a highly reliable product,” Jeon said. “If you don’t back up your data properly and were unable to take appropriate actions when your data is lost, the damage to your business cannot be underestimated,” Jeon said.

“It is essential that we are ready to prevent any future data damage from incidents like hardware failures, virus and malware attacks.”
