Dow Jones’ move to AWS with Commvault

Challenge

In 2014, Dow Jones’ parent company News Corp North America laid out goals to move 75% of all compute to the public cloud and reduce 50 data centers globally down to six.

At the time, Dow Jones had more than 30,000 tapes in off-site storage, containing more than five petabytes of data. Its backup and disaster recovery strategy relied on a disaster recovery data center 30 miles away from its operations in New Jersey, yielding large offsite storage costs and unacceptable Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for the recovery of mission-critical applications. Moreover, the disaster recovery data center was susceptible to natural disaster. With hurricane potential a real threat on the East Coast, the firm needed a better plan to manage data outside of its primary and disaster recovery data centers in New Jersey.

Result

Dow Jones chose to move data to the Amazon AWS Cloud – and to use Commvault for secure data migration, backup, management and recovery. As of December 2016, Dow Jones has moved 58% of its compute to the AWS Cloud and has seen a 400% increase in AWS instances year over year. During that same time frame, the company has been able to migrate more than 4,000 instances to the public cloud and reduced data center power consumption below 2005 levels. With automation and orchestration for data management across cloud and on-premises storage, Commvault software has enabled development teams to focus on their core business and provide better resiliency to their stewardship. In case of natural disaster, Commvault and AWS ensure that their data is protected and available.

After moving to the cloud with Commvault and AWS, Dow Jones has reduced monthly expenditures on DR operations by 50% or more. In addition to the cost reduction, it has actually improved recovery times from four days down to four hours for key applications.

Now we’re in the process of putting together a comprehensive DR strategy with Commvault and AWS infrastructure and can protect our data that is in the legacy data centers and those running in the cloud.

Why Commvault?

Dow Jones has many different brands operating underneath it. With different brands serving different functions, it is important to maintain differentiation between them, while being able to discern data from different sources. As of 2016, Dow Jones had over 50% of its infrastructure running in the public cloud, yet there was still 5 PB of data on-premises. It was still paying for offsite storage, and SLAs for the data in off-site data centers were too slow. Commvault simplifies hybrid cloud management by providing a single interface for complete data management of on-premises and public cloud assets.

Unlike most backup and recovery solutions, Commvault offers a single data platform solution for all backup and recovery needs; as opposed to having several point solutions for each use case (i.e. specific solutions for storage, backup, recovery, etc.). From a single platform, Commvault offers comprehensive data management capabilities including data backup, recovery, management and e-discovery, capabilities that are tightly integrated with Amazon cloud storage. It is built from scratch; meaning all storage, backup and disaster recovery functions communicate with each other as one solution, regardless of where the data resides. This enables Dow Jones to consistently manage its hybrid cloud environment and to improve resiliency by writing backups directly to Amazon S3, Amazon Standard-Infrequent Access (Standard-IA), or Glacier.

Why AWS?

Smaller news startups, like The Huffington Post and Buzzfeed were developing content and applications faster than Dow Jones’ subsidiaries. The AWS Cloud provided Dow Jones with the agility the development teams needed to improve time to market for its products, making Dow Jones more competitive with the younger startup competitors. To meet the goal of reducing from 50 data centers to six worldwide, Dow Jones needed to move 10,000 compute instances, virtual and physical, into the public cloud.

The AWS infrastructure provided the scale and flexibility needed to do so, and Dow Jones estimated it could save $100 million annually. The compute capacity and automated nature of AWS offerings allowed the engineering team to focus on building applications to deliver the best possible customer experience for online subscribers.
