Fast and reliable backups support growth

Dongbu Steel is one of the leading Korean steel manufacturers with more than 40 years of experience, producing approximately 2.4 million tons of high-quality steel products, such as cold-rolled steel sheets, per year. The company has helped to enhance the competitiveness of major Korean industries, such as automobiles, electronics, and construction, through its commitment to quality and innovation.

With the explosion in data volumes following company growth, Dongbu Steel introduced Commvault Complete™ Backup & Recovery to enable greater efficiency and reliability and to protect data across a range of systems, including its ERP environment, multiple databases, and virtual machines. For example, its ERP data and databases can now be backed up in just two hours rather than a minimum of four hours previously. Commvault IntelliSnap® software also helped Dongbu Steel drive a 6x increase in the speed of its virtual server backups, which run over a 10 G high-speed network along with other backups.

Simplifying data management

Prior to implementing Commvault, Dongbu Steel’s legacy tape-based infrastructure was difficult to manage and unreliable. Insufficient storage space resulted in backup delays, media errors, and failures. The user interface was also weak and often required manual intervention. Commvault partner, Curoid proposed Commvault Complete™ Backup & Recovery based on its exceptional deduplication engine and replication capabilities.

Using replication, Dongbu can send auxiliary copies of its data from primary storage to secondary storage for Disaster Recovery purposes.

“As our company grew, we needed a flexible and scalable data backup and recovery solution to support the increasing volumes of data. Commvault not only enabled us to achieve this but also helped us dramatically reduce costs,” says Junsoo Park, Data Center Team Manager at DB Inc., the parent company of Dongbu Steel. “Commvault’s licensing model gives us the flexibility to expand based on changes in the environment, without purchasing separate licenses.”

Reducing costs with deduplication and more efficient processes

With a single console and intuitive user interface in Korean, Dongbu Steel can simplify all backup operations and reporting. Support for PostgreSQL database means that a previously complicated script backup method has been replaced with a simple configuration on the Commvault solution.

By migrating from tape backups to Commvault’s disk-based backups with deduplication, Dongbu Steel can scale its backup, recovery, and data management operations and reduce costs as the business grows.

With deduplication, redundant data is not backed up, which optimizes storage costs and reduces the size of the overall backup. Since backups can be processed faster, it frees up system resources to improve the overall performance. And by utilizing deduplication, only unique data is sent to the secondary site, optimizing network bandwidth and making disaster recovery more efficient.
